we're gearing-up to roll-out CS3 updates here at work; a couple of teams are using it sporadically -- amazingly there hasn't been any major retro-versioning issues... yet...
i've been reading about some printing issues, and we have had one problem with printing to a Xerox DC250 that was solved by updating the driver.
evidently *many* people have been having trouble printing from photoshop. check out this blog: http://blogs.adobe.com/jnack/2007/10/fixes_for_photo.html

Before ,when we did short 24-page jobs, I just typed out all the text in word, then flowed it into Quark, putting item pictures off to the side. A lot of work, but not THAT bad.

We have an Excel database of item information for 800 items. I'm thinking there's a better way to do this than just making one big word filem, which would probably end up being too big to import anyway. Suggestions?

We have inDesign, but I'm not keen on it. Would prefer to stick to a Quark, but I would buy an indesign product if it made things easier.
He suggested to me that this is an outdated and uncessary practice, as my printer will do this for me.

My first thought is that its simply good practice to keep your files clean and as perfect as possible, regardless of what you think your printer will be doing with them. My second thought is that I have to have the color mode as cymk when I send my proofs to the client, so that they will see the colors as close as possible to what will be printed (understanding, ofcourse, that not everyone has a calibrated monitor so things do appear differently in print regardless...)
Any other thoughts on this matter? Any printer/prepress folks have input about it?

I am considering the idea of becoming a "print broker"..a new term for me. basically, regardless of wether I design the artwork or not..I could be the middle man between clients and printers. I found Zoo Printing, which gives great trade rates, but they are in CA and don't ship to PR. They print in quantities of less that 5,000. Pk only does 5,000 or more, gang run. Anyway, my question is..

Does anyone know of a good digital printer in the FLA area (it's closest to where I live, so shipping should be less), that offers good print brokerage prices?

I really need to find a printer. I need a press that presses 17 by 22 and who will teach me what he/she needs to do most of the job so we aren't paying post production costs. I'm in San Diego. How do I even begin to look for a printer?

My criteria:

300-600
8-12 page papers (so 4-6 pages front and back)
1 color processing
Indesign 2.0

I now understand how to download my fonts and my images with the file and make a PDF but my PDF came out all funky still.
Do I have to figure out the size of the pictures like I used to have to, or can the person just fit the pic to the hole I leave, or can indesign actually now incorporate the picture at a high DPI?

Thanks for any help.

I am using Photoshop 7 & Quark 6.1 on OSX 10.3.7. When I create a complex clipping path using the pen tool in Photoshop, I often use the opt key and click on a point when I want to only have one beziar curve arm... (I don't know if I worded that correctly) anyway, when I import the image as a tiff into Quark, where ever I have a 1 armed curve, it makes a straight line and the clipping path is all mucked up. When I import the same Image (although it is the PSD file) with the same clipping path into Illustrator it looks good.

Has anyone else experienced this? Any solutions? Right now I recreate the clipping path by making my path into a selection and then created a path from the selection... etc. It's just additional steps that I would rather not take, it also creates additional points, slower print time and sometimes causes a different issue in Quark.

Should I post this somewhere else?

I am currently in the process of making a career shift, where I will be going back to school this coming January at Parsons School of Design (NYC) for an accelerated degree in graphic design.

At the same time, I am planning on leaving my current job, and would like to find a position as a highly-experienced production artist, as I have 17 years under my belt, both traditionally and digitally. I've been a manager for over five years and have no interest in managing any longer. All I want to do is get the work, do it, and go home at the end of the day…end of story. I plan to hold this position while attending school, then move on to a design position upon graduating.

My question to you all is the following: What would be the most important thing to present to a prospective employer…my resume with all my experience, skills and accomplishments listed, or a portfolio containing all my production work? In your opinion, which of these would hold more weight?

I have one: do not use HP's 750 or 950 PSC series with Mac OS X machines. It appears there's something wrong with the USB drivers that HP supplies for these model printers, as well as the general application design: each time you plug in the printer, a little "HP Director" application loads up (with an interface that belies its age) that progressively chews up your CPU and memory. People have written scripts to disable the thing, since HP doesn't provide a way to.

Worse yet, actually printing to the device causes your machine to slow to a crawl. It rendered a 600mHz G3 iBook nearly unusable, and it's still a noticeable hit on a 6-month-old 867mHz PowerBook G4. Reminiscent of the old days before multitasking, where you started a print job and then went to lunch.

My Canon and Epson-owning friends just shrug when I ask if they have similar problems.

(The output is gorgeous, though. Just takes forever to output. And it's just the inkjets, it seems. HP LaserJets work like a dream, as always.)

Anyone know of a good Mac application for browsing through large numbers of large image files? I'm talking something that will rip through 100's of huge RAW image files (10+ MB) and generate previews on-the-fly. OS X's native preview isn't fast enough, nor does it generate preview images/thumbnails that are large enough to actually make decisions based on image quality.

Basically, this would be an application for reviewing photos for print publication -- no retouching or even cropping. The most one would do is rotate 90 degrees.
