black and white/indesign question

topic posted Thu, January 4, 2007 - 8:23 AM by  dani
is there a way to place all the color photos and then turn them ALL to black and white through indesign in one move...if not is there a way to make them black and white individually through indesign to save me the step of specifically making them black and white in photoshop?

    Open an image.
    Open your actions pallette.
    Create a new action.
    Convert the image to greyscale.
Stop the recording of the action.
    Close the image

    Go to File>Automate>Batch
Choose the action you just made.
Choose the source folder you want to convert.
Set the Destination to "Save and Close"
Go back to bed for ten minutes or so.

That was the directions to do it in photoshop, not indesign. So long as there aren't any spot colors, you can output as composite grey, other than that Photoshop might be better suited for the task.

Hmmm. I wish I could do it after I place the photos in indesign.

I wish I knew these programs better, it's like you have to have a degree to use them properly.

thank you so much for answering :)

How do you create a new action? Do I open the pallette from "view?"

"How do you create a new action? Do I open the pallette from "view?""

Yep. View the palette, click on the"arrow" on the side of the palette and select "new action".
The rest can be done with the "play," "stop,""record" buttons at the bottom of the palette. When you first create a new action it begins in record mode.

            In photoshop:

open one of your images, open your actions palette (window pull down to Action) click on the triangle in the upper-right hand corner of the palette, pull down to New Action, a dialog box will appear asking what to name your action. I would name it "Convert to GS". Hit record. Click on the image that you opened and convert to greyscale (image, mode, greyscale). Save the file and close. Go to the actions palette and hit the square button at the bottom of the palette (that will stop the recording of the action). The go to file: automate: batch

click on choose to select the folder with the files you want to convert: check "suppress file..." and "suppress color..." Destination select another folder or simply save and close, it's up to u. Hit OK, and it'll do the rest.

How to update the color images to black and white:

If you name the files exactly the same and replace the color images with the GS images. Open the InDesign file, go to the links palette (window: Links), select all of the links (shift+click on the top most link and then the bottom most link--still holding shift key--that will automatically select those links as well as any links in between) and Update link (click on the triangle in the upper-right hand corner of the links palette: pull down to Update link.

Although I'm not really an expert, I know that InDesign is basically a spiffy word processor and page layout program that has the ability to call up other files (like pictures) made by other programs and virtually "place" them on the page. It's not like when you open a new image in photoshop and drag it onto your canvas as a new layer. InDesigh is just showing a represention of the other file in your .indd until you go to make a .pdf, at which point it finds it on your hard drive and puts it onto your new document.

You have to use an image editor for images. And if you just follow the relevant help section in photoshop, you should be able to make an action and then batch process all your pictures before placing them onto your page in InDesign. Batch processing is a really really valuable trick to know if you're ever changing multiple images in similar ways. And it's pretty easy to learn. The file extention part in the "save as" function is kinda tricky.

    Good luck

Jason is almost right it . InDesign is a Pagination application it has incorporated new graphic capabilities and keeps adding them ( like spiffy drop shadows !). All colour conversions should be done in Photoshop or the Application they were made in. unnin an action on the folder and saving them to a different folder then re-linking them would be the smartest move and it has been mentioned above except with saving them to a different folder so you can go back and tweak them if nescessary. Unfortunately converting to greyscale if not done prperly can leave nothing but muddy images !! Anyways good luck.
