i'm using Quark 6 (mac) and
designing a simple letterhead, envelope, card, shipping label. i have a brown box with white type that knocks out and black type that i want to knock out and trap.
i don't usually mess with this trapping stuff. anyone know where i could read up on it?

Re: trapping - don't really know what i am doing...
Mon, August 9, 2004 - 10:29 AMI dont understant why you would want to knock the black out . . . the black would just get darker . . . but you could just use the quark trapping - as bad as it is it is sufficient for this case as I understand it

Tue, August 17, 2004 - 6:50 PMCheck with your printer as to what type of press it is going on. On some presses it is not an issue at all, on others it is.
Trust me, your pressman will be impressed that you even asked. -

Re: trapping - don't really know what i am doing...
Sun, January 8, 2006 - 9:05 PMHe won't be impressed, he'll be shocked. I can't tell you how many artists I had to educate on color, teach them that color doesn't work on a press the same way it works on a screen...
One of the reasons I quit printing years ago. That, and I can't find a decent job at a decent pay rate anymore... -

Re: trapping - don't really know what i am doing...
Mon, January 9, 2006 - 8:40 PMThey say the current indesign is made to show you exactly what color will look like when you print. My printer had a little orgasm when he explained it to me. -

Re: trapping - don't really know what i am doing...
Tue, January 10, 2006 - 2:33 PMthat's called Overprint Preview. you can do it in Illustrator too -

Re: trapping - don't really know what i am doing...
Tue, January 10, 2006 - 5:29 PMHe said, "You don't have to use Illustrator anymore to see the exact color you are printing, so it eliminates a step."
What is trapping anyways? -

Re: trapping - don't really know what i am doing...
Tue, January 10, 2006 - 7:26 PMmy first impression is to say "he's stoned." -- but since i don't know the whole situation... *G*
basically, trapping is the overlap area where two colors butt-up against each other, so that if one of the printing plates is off a little bit you don't see the paper show through. that's the most simplistic answer; the heavy-hairy answer goes into ink densities and stuff that Lee would be better suited talking about.

Re: trapping - don't really know what i am doing...
Mon, January 9, 2006 - 7:14 AMnot necessarily -- i've had jobs *go bad* because i ASSUMED the printer was gonna trap the files. (of course, i don't use printers anymore that ASSUMED they don't need to trap because i didn't mention it...)
anyway, the point is -- if you're using a new printer ASK them about it; they'll be glad to guide you. -

Mon, January 9, 2006 - 1:47 AMbut I agree with the previous comment also, let the black type overprint!

Re: trapping - don't really know what i am doing...
Mon, January 9, 2006 - 7:16 AMthe thing is, if you have large-copy black text and you overprint that onto several different colors, then you will see a color variation in the black text. (as Lee pointed out in another thread, printing inks aren't completely opaque!)
if the text is small, then you can get away with it... -

Re: trapping - don't really know what i am doing...
Mon, January 9, 2006 - 3:59 PMOverprinting only a brown box is not a problem which is the case here.
Yes overprinting over several different colors will create a different opacity. Ray brings up a good point with inks in general. Black overprint on metallic inks is a no no

Re: trapping - don't really know what i am doing...
Wed, January 11, 2006 - 8:35 AMIt could also be a problem if both the inks are a similar thickness and if the press only has one cylinder. The overprinted color sometimes ends up lifting and you don't end up with a good impression.
