Sun, January 8, 2006 - 9:15 PMDon't expect color to work the same way on a press as it does on a computer screen... -

Re: gimme some tips and some tricks!
Sun, January 8, 2006 - 10:55 PMSo Lee, tell us what you know, and don't hold back...
I just turned in my paper to the printer and he's mad because the photos are only virtual...I don't the right words, but I understand him...when you place a photo, it's only a low res file to show you what it looks like, but you are supposed to send the picture with the file. Of course, sending them is tedious when the files are many and huge. It took me 5 e-mails to send them. Anyone know a solution to my problem I'm probably not seeing?

Re: gimme some tips and some tricks!
Sun, January 8, 2006 - 11:28 PMemail is a horrible option for sending large files. Ask your printer if he has ftp (he should) and then ftp the files to him. I sugest filezilla as its free and easy to use. filezilla.sourceforge.net/ -

Sun, January 8, 2006 - 11:32 PMIf possible, hand him a disk, in person, rather than mailing them. -

Re: gimme some tips and some tricks!
Sun, January 8, 2006 - 11:39 PM>"So Lee, tell us what you know, and don't hold back... "<
I know it's late, and I'm tired, and my wife went to bed 2 hours ago and I should join her.
I also know that technology has passed me by. I ran presses and did pre-press back when cut and paste meant you cut type from a sheet you got from the typesetter, and pasted it onto a layout board with real paste (Or wax). I also know that my eye for color isn't what it used to be. I got old.
But I USED to be good. I could spot an error in a magazine faster than anyone. (I was at a film output house once and the manager wanted to show off one of her ads in a printed magazine, and as she was flipping through the magazine looking for the page number, I stuck my finger in a page and said there was an error on that page. She turned back to it and I was right, one of the ads was slightly out of register...)

Re: gimme some tips and some tricks!
Mon, January 9, 2006 - 7:09 AMdon't count yourself out! believe me, the industry needs good people -- especially ones that know the mechanical more than the digital. even a little effort at learning the *new* way will take you farther than you might expect. -

Re: gimme some tips and some tricks!
Mon, January 9, 2006 - 8:38 PMNo one in the industry considers me 'good people' Computer graphics guys have always treated me like dirt. The guy condescends to me today...you really should get indesign...
it's not the program, it's the artistry I think. I'll get it soon. Sometimes I just don't know what to ask. -
